Watering and wilting.
A drooping leaf is a starting clue, not a watering instruction. First compare moisture below the surface with drainage, pot weight and recent weather. Dry roots and damaged wet roots can leave a plant looking similarly limp. These guides help you make the next check before choosing a response.
Start with the moisture check
A dry surface can conceal a damp root ball. Check an accessible part of the active root zone and compare several clues before deciding. The depth that matters for a young seedling is different from the depth that matters for an established patio plant.
Checking Moisture Below a Dry Surface
Check moisture in the active root zone and compare more than one spot. Surface color alone cannot tell you whether a plant needs water.

Water a snake plant after its root zone has dried, then drain it fully. A dry surface alone does not show what is happening deeper in the pot.

Check the mix before watering a drooping peace lily. Dry roots and persistently wet roots can produce a similar wilted appearance.

Watch what happens during watering. Liquid leaving a drainage hole does not prove that it entered a dry center, while a decorative cover can hide standing runoff. Work out where the water goes before changing the amount or adding a new product.
Rewetting Potting Mix After It Dries Hard
When water runs down the side of a dry pot, rewet the root ball gradually and confirm that moisture reached the center.

A hanging basket should be checked at a safe height. If it cannot be reached comfortably, arrange a suitable lowering system or a different hook position before planting.

Plants that share a shelf do not necessarily share moisture needs. Compare the species, root space and exposure. Reminders are useful for inspections; the actual state of each pot should decide whether watering follows.

Let a container rosemary approach dryness between thorough waterings, while checking that its original root ball has not become completely dry.
